Burrswood has been established since 1948, when it was originally started by Dorothy Kerin and initially registered as a nursing home with the West Kent Registration Authority. Since December 2000 Burrswood has been registered as a hospital, and is now registered with the Care Quality Commission (formerly the Health Care Commission). Although registered as an independent (non-surgical) hospital, Burrswood receives no contractual statutory funding from the NHS or any other government department. In common with other independent hospitals we are reliant on fee income from patients but unlike most other providers, as a registered charity we offer financial support to those who are unable to afford the full cost of their care.
