Sue Pople - Head of Physiotherapy

Having qualified from King’s College hospital in 1981,I worked for the NHS  in the Brighton and Mid Sussex area, completing a wide range of rotational positions.

I started a small private practice in 1987, working with older patients many of whom had Alzheimer’s disease and Dementia.  I am particularly interested in orthopaedic, elderly frail and neurological rehabilitation.

I joined Burrswood as Head of Department in 2008. My interest in rehabilitation has grown as I have had the opportunity to develop my skills, particularly in hydrotherapy, through several courses and in service training.

Whole person care is central to my work, using specific clinical skills along side those of listening and encouragement. I believe that a physiotherapist’s role is that of facilitation and empowering the patients to be as independent as possible.

As a youngster I was signed to a professional football club for 6 years. I longed to pursue a career as a professional sportsman however this was cut short through injury. In subsequent years I went on to qualify as a Level 2 Personal Trainer working for myself and corporate firms such as Citi bank and HSBC in London. I qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2012 from the University of Brighton.

Since qualifying I have worked in the private sector within the field of musculoskeletal Physiotherapy. During this time I developed skills in manual therapy including deep soft tissue massage, muscle energy techniques and joint manipulations.  Application of these techniques enabled me to treat a vast array of sporting and soft tissue injures effectively. The experience of working privately has certainly enhanced my diagnostic and clinical reasoning abilities.

I have found Burrswood to be a stimulating environment to work in. I enjoy being part of a multi disciplinary team that is driven towards exceptional standards of patient centred care. In the future I want to further advance my learning within the fields of neurology and hydrotherapy.

I qualified as a physiotherapist in 1993 having graduated from King’s College University.  I have worked at Chailey Heritage and The Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.

I now specialise in neurology though my other passion is teaching and I have been a Clinical Educator for physiotherapy students for many years. In the summer of 2000 I was seconded to Brighton University to carry out a research project which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I studied Bsc (Hons) physiotherapy as a mature student and qualified from the University of Brighton in 2010. I then began working in palliative care at St Wilfrid’s hospice in Eastbourne, as well as assisting at a private practice. I enjoyed the whole person approach and broad skill set that palliative care requires and have found this style of care has lent itself to Burrswood's ethos of holistic care for a wide variety of patients.

Whilst enjoying variety within my role I have developed a particular interest in the treatment of myofascial pain with a combination of manual therapy techniques, dry needling and exercise. I have found this combined approach effective in facilitating rehabilitation and since being welcomed into the team in 2012, have found Burrswood with its facilities, the ideal place to provide this care.

I grew up in Sussex, went to secondary school in Tunbridge Wells and then returned home after finishing at Coventry university.  I visited Burrswood tearoom as a child but I have since learnt Burrswood offers a whole lot more than great cake.

Since joining the team in Oct 2010, I have completed a hydrotherapy course, psychological skills training in chronic conditions and currently lead the weekly Physical Relaxation class.  I am also qualified in Sports Emergency first aid.

My physiotherapy interests currently lie within the consolidation of skills learnt throughout my student career and the use of aquatic therapy in a variety of conditions.

I studied an accelerated physiotherapy degree at Brighton University, following which I worked at Croydon PCT and Mayday Hospitals before joining Burrswood.  As part of the MSc Course I completed a 15,000 word dissertation on low back pain which I revised and published in a medical journal called ‘Manual Therapy’.  I presented my research at a National Physiotherapy Research Network meeting and at an Interdisciplinary World Conference on Low Back and Pelvic Pain in Los Angeles, USA.

I have a special interest in musculoskeletal problems and sports injuries.  I was a member of the Football Association Medical Society for 2 years and I have completed a Level 1 Clinical Pilates course, Hydrotherapy courses, and attended advanced classes on low back and pelvic pain.

I enjoy working at Burrswood Hospital and am currently working on a research project for people with Multiple Sclerosis in collaboration with the University of Brighton.

I grew up on the beautiful island of Guernsey in the Channel Islands and then moved to the 'mainland' to study for my degree in Physiotherapy at the University of Southampton. During my student summer holidays I travelled to India and Tanzania to work with charities teaching English, working on development projects and putting my newly acquired physiotherapy skills to use.  After qualifying, I worked at an independent college for young adults with complex learning disabilities before I joined the team at Burrswood in April 2013.

I have completed a course in aquatic physiotherapy and I really enjoy treating patients in our hydrotherapy pool.

I currently have a broad range of clinical interests which I am enjoying exploring and developing through working at Burrswood.
