Praying for Burrswood

our prayer diary

Our prayer diary, published three times a year, is available below or in a printable format at the bottom of this page.

Our Senior Chaplain writes:

When I first became a Christian and attended Confirmation classes, I was taught that prayer should begin with praise and thanksgiving, and I learned that beautiful old prayer, the General Thanksgiving from the Book of Common Prayer. That routine of thanksgiving is a very good discipline, and as we travel further and deeper into our Christian life, we train our souls to see signs of God’s presence and his healing love active within us and in the world around us, and that changes our whole perspective.

I don’t think I shall ever get used to seeing, hearing about and experiencing the power of God’s healing love. Every time a person is healed of hurts and damage accumulated sometimes over a lifetime, every time a life is transformed by the inrushing love of God, every time one of us is guided into doing something or going somewhere and then finding out why, every time God breaks through our own agendas and replaces them with his – my heart leaps, and I say aloud or silently, ‘Wow, how amazing you are, Lord, thank you!’

I wondered whether I should go on being surprised and amazed that God listens to our prayer and responds – shouldn’t I expect him to? Then I remembered my little grandson’s face when he opened his Christmas present and how he’d hugged me as he said, ‘Wow, Grandma, thank you!’ and how that made me feel. I hope he never loses his delight at being given gifts of love, and I suspect that God rejoices too when we say, ‘Wow, Lord, thank you, you are amazing.’ So I shall go on being surprised and delighted by the depth of God’s love, his awesome understanding and his endless generosity. Or, to put it more sedately, in the words of that old prayer:

‘We beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we show forth thy praise, not only with our lips but in our lives.’ Amen.
