How is it from the family's perspective?
One relative whose father was at Burrswood for over nine months writes:
‘As a family we were faced with a dilemma in October 2007 - my dear Daddy having been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Of course he wanted to stay at home and we wanted to help him achieve that goal, but after a few weeks it became obvious that it simply wasn't going to work. I felt such immense guilt at not being able to look after him myself, but we both came to the conclusion that it was better for our relationship to find an alternative.
My husband and I visited Burrswood - turning up unannounced one Saturday afternoon; no fuss was made about this and we were shown round and soon realised it would cater very adequately for Daddy's needs. So I brought him to Burrswood on a typical December day - chilly, dark and slightly depressing. Was the atmosphere inside like this? Certainly not! We were welcomed and my first impression was how much time people were giving him. It was not simply a case of taking a medical history, prescribing medication and leaving him to it. The doctor and nursing staff we met seemed to want to get to know him, to really know the whole person. He admitted that day that he was not looking forward to the future and wished he could die soon. Quite a challenge...but not for Burrswood! He was of course depressed, but this attitude soon changed.
I spoke to him every day - sometimes he was nowhere to be found, as he would be roaming the grounds in his buggy. This simple piece of equipment gave him a new lease of life and the independence he so craved. More than once he had to call staff from his mobile phone to be rescued as he had become bogged down going 'off piste'.
Over the next few months it became apparent that whatever challenges he faced, there was someone there to discuss them with and offer a solution. During the night the nurses would often take him a cup of tea, and with his typical Northern humour he would end up trying to solve their problems. He adored people and I think he gave as much to Burrswood as they gave to him.
We loved our visits on a Sunday and were quickly made to feel part of a very special family. Sunday lunch in the dining room followed by a walk in his beloved grounds became our routine.
All I can say is my father deserved a truly fulfilling last nine months of life, and thanks to Burrswood he achieved it. Once again I would like to express my family's thanks to all who cared for his spiritual and physical wellbeing.’
